Where ever you are, you will advance.
I've held off writing my review following my recent attendance to the LRAC. In part to review notes, apply parts of what I've learned at my home range and, to be honest, find some kind of con to the class/curriculum/instructors. The truth is, there are none to be found.
The class is structured broadly and inclusively. It meets every shooter and their weapon system where they're at. Our class had everything from a light framed Rem 700, to an M1A as well as its fair share of small and large frame AR's. John clearly wanted to see every system out of the gate and to me that appeared to be strategic as he made sure class material was applicable to everyone's hardware from day 1.
John and Brian are a wealth of knowledge. Each having their own styles to correct bad habits/errors and reinforce each students strengths.
Maybe most importantly, these guys left no man behind. Our class was not without bad zero's/hardware failures etc. Despite that, the guys made sure that the issues were addressed and corrected promptly while also insuring that the class didn't suffer lost time because of those peripheral issues.
If you're on the fence about this class, don't be. I would consider myself an "avid hobby shooter" who hasn't been afraid to get off my wallet for a nice piece of glass or a decent match grade barrel. To me, this class has been the greatest addition (tangible or otherwise) to a good number of my weapon systems. Its true when they say "you don't know what you don't know" and I didn't know A LOT. This class has instilled in me a higher degree of confidence as a shooter and has given me numerous avenues to explore to bolster my abilities behind my firearms.
The course was structured very well to take someone from never handling a rifle before, to engaging targets past 500 yards. The 4-day course began with a well presented flood of information that served as an excellent foundation for the practical exercises later.
When it came time to go out and get familiar with the knowledge, and our weapon system, both John and Brian were attentive and informative, answering questions, and pointing out improvements. As the course progressed and the students became more familiar with their equipment, and became curious about other gear that might further advance their hobby, John and Brian were a wealth of knowledge regarding all the stuff that's out there, while they presented their opinions, it never felt like a product pitch, or a judgement based on budget.
The material and exercises built on itself within the course, and in most cases expanded upon any prior knowledge the student brought with them. Making the course a value to even experienced shooters.
Attending the 4-day Scoped Rifle Class was an immersive journey into the art of marksmanship. Each day was meticulously crafted to focus on shooting fundamentals, from mastering positions to calculating elevation holds and engaging targets swiftly. The instructors' expertise shone through as they imparted their knowledge with clarity and patience, guiding us to refine our techniques and correct any ingrained habits from bench shooting. Their insightful feedback was instrumental in my progress, providing tangible areas for improvement.
What truly set this class apart was its emphasis on practical application. Through a series of live-fire exercises at varying distances, we were challenged to put theory into practice, honing our skills under real-world conditions.
By the end of the course, I not only gained a deeper understanding of precision shooting but also a newfound confidence in my abilities. Armed with a toolkit of techniques and strategies, I left the class with a clear path for continued improvement.
In summary, the Scoped Rifle Class offered a comprehensive and engaging experience that left a lasting impact. Whether you're a novice shooter or a seasoned marksman, this course provides the perfect opportunity to elevate your skills and take your shooting to new heights. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to refine their marksmanship abilities and embrace the thrill of precision shooting.
I thought I knew marksmanship from 15 years of training in the US Army, including 4 years serving in the infantry. This course was an eye opener and I really feel like this has opened me up to whole new tier in marksmanship.
John and Brian did an incredible job going over everything you need to know to get started in long range rifle marksmanship and everything to advance your skills.
John really set the tone for a really great learning environment and was super approachable. He is not a "stuffy" instructor and keeps things light while he fills your head with his encyclopedic knowledge on long range marksmanship. The course material is applicable to all sorts of real world applications, everything from military, hunting, self defense, and competition shooting.
My favorite parts of this course were fixing bad habits, relearning positional shooting fundamentals, learning how to use a ballistics calculator, understanding speed drops, using new equipment such as bipods, shooting bags, and tripods. Also, I learned that milradians are king and I'm never going to buy another MOA or BDC optic!
The best part of this course are all the hands on drills, applying the new skills, and making steel ring out to 800 yards! Every day you get a chance to apply what you learned. I feel equipped to go out and continue my training after taking this course.
Last but not least, I was also able to expand my network with like minded classmates that were a pleasure to learn and train beside.
This was I believe my fourth class with Rughi, and first with Brian on board. Both of them offered a wealth of knowledge and experience which compliment well. Every time I take a class with Rughi I walk away with a fresh perspective on the multitude of ways in which I can handle a firearm and approach marksmanship as a whole. I think fundamentally his strength as a teacher lies in creating a learning environment which supports self analysis while building a solid foundation in practical and modern marksmanship techniques. You will learn to be a much better shooter over the duration of this class, but more importantly you will be given an entire suite of self assessment tools which will allow you to develop, self correct, and progress over time. From start to finish there was a range of experience levels at the class I attended, from amateur to professional level shooters, all of whom developed new skills and demonstrated growth in some way. Safety was never overlooked, medical equipment was on site and a casualty plan was always reviewed and in place, which shows significant situational awareness and a level of professionalism that I appreciate. I think if you are looking for an ego free, well rounded and professional setting to grow this is the pipeline to that goal. This course is information dense and will leave you feeling confident and in a place where you can take a shot knowing that even if you miss you have the tools available to correct your shot and hit!
Don't know what rifle to bring?
Whether you're shooting a bolt action or semi-auto, this course is for you.
