We’ll load up with our packs, move as a group on a short hike to a predetermined location, and run a rifle-focused shoot with emphasis on fundamentals, communication, and learning from one another. This is not a competition and not a money-making event, it’s about experience, community, and putting in time under real conditions.

Event Flow

  1. Link-Up

    • Meet at a central parking lot or trailhead.

    • Safety brief: firearm handling, medical plan, comms, and route.

    • Gear check: packs, rifles, water, ammo, IFAKs.

  2. Hike Phase

    • Moderate trail, 2–4 miles.

    • This isn't a race. Just a walk to our positions. If you are concerned about physical fitness, there is no rush in any portion. It is always better to just get out and do it and that's what this is all about.

  3. Shoot Phase

    Shooting Portion Summary

At the Rifle Ruck, the hike ends with a four-stage live-fire course designed to blend competition with real-world rifle application. Each stage will challenge different skills under field conditions, ranging from stress shooting after exertion to positional work, target identification, and problem-solving under time pressure. Scores are tracked across all stages, and the shooter with the highest overall performance will win a sponsored prize.

  4. Wrap-Up

    • Police brass and trash.

    • AAR (after-action review): what worked, what to improve.

    • Optional hangout (cookout, local spot for food, determined on day by the group).

My only regret is I didn’t take enough pictures!

My two hour drive up was one of the most anxiety ridden drives I’ve ever had. I should up so early and thought about going back home. I was afraid of not being fit for the hike and what everyone would think about my kit, or worse my shooting. After meeting everyone I realized the point is to hangout and get better with what you have.

Awesome experience. First time ever doing something like this. Great opportunity to meet new people and run your kit in real world conditions beyond the flat range. Looking forward to the next one.

Rifle Ruck

This was a really good experience. The event was set up well, and we got to go out and shoot in a very different environment from the regular flat range environment that I normally shoot. I came away with plenty to practice.

Overall, I’d highly recommend this for anyone who wants to come out and get some exercise, do some shooting and meet some good people. John did a good job of tailoring the event to the capabilities of everyone there.

Outstanding competition

Great day, better people, well constructed, beautiful area. Only issues were self induced. 2 mile ruck at elevation was real nice for getting back into it.

One of the best times I've had shooting in the mountains. Learned an insane amount. From shooting to gear and how to use it effectively, you'll learn a ton and have a good amount of fun while doing it.
